Comparing Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone Book to the Film

This was harder to do than I expected, because while reading the book, the film was just playing through my mind in the background the whole time. I couldn’t tell if the picture was being painted in my head through the words or if it was already too engrained on my brain after watching the film countless times over the years.

I was told there’s a lot more detail in the books than in the film but as book one is the shortest I feel like more details are to come later on. One thing that really helped was reading words I haven’t been able to understand in the film before because of accents or something, so I do feel now that I’m clearer on those now. Also, I think I understand the rules of quidditch better, I knew them before but didn’t really think about them as I was just on auto pilot.

To be honest, I’m glad they skipped the start of the book with Vernon going to the office and everything. I prefer how they betrayed him in the film of having no idea that anything witchy is going on with Harry until the letters turn up.

Character wise, Professor McGonagall is one of my faves and she comes across so much scarier in the books than the film. I’m actually pretty amazed by how well Professor Dumbledore and Hagrid are betrayed from the books in the film. They have got it absolutely spot on, it’s obvious that they are amazing actors however I didn’t realise they had become the book characters so brilliantly!

It’s so hard to see the stories from a new when you know the film version so well, it’s really, really difficult to try and reset your mind.

A difference I noticed was the variation in the timeframe that things happen, they also happen in different orders and with different people. Neville seems to have a bigger part in the book than the film.

One thing I’m so pleased they added in the film is when Dudley gets stuck behind the glass in the zoo. I find that bit hilarious.

I prefer how in the book Harry and Ron aren’t just friends with Hermione straight off the bat, I like the way they become friends in the book after she covers for Harry and Ron. Whereas in the film they were kind of friends from the start but just became closer later on.

There’s lots of areas I could pin prick but I’m trying to keep this short and sweet.

Do I prefer the book or the film? Until I’ve read each book I really can’t answer that question but to be honest I think I'm just going to appreciate being able to experience the story in different ways because I love this wizard world so much.
