It's been a few weeks since I've posted on here, I've been too busy tucked inside books! Recently, I read my first classic; The Great Gatsby. Before I picked it up I knew the storyline and I'd watched the film that has Leonardo DiCaprio in it on numerous occasions. The film is quite upbeat and it drowned out how sad a story this tale really is. This book isn't very long and so I finished it all in one night. It's a really easy read and a novel you could pick up time and time again.
There are some brilliant lines in the book and I most of all love one of Daisy's famous lines at the beginning about her daughter; "I hope she'll be a fool - that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool." The book is a 1925 novel and that line is still so relevant in this day and age, showing how hard life can be for a girl if thy don't fall into society's so called normal. Like I say, the language used in this book is great. Gatsby calls everyone "Old Sport" I love it.
This book is essentially all about being whoever you want to be which I think is a great message. For me, Daisy is an absolute hero and makes the story. With classic or extremely well known books I almost don't even feel like I can rate them, because clearly they have their status for a reason.
As what is probably classed as the first classic I've read I'd give this a 4 to 4 and a half star rating. I feel like in some places there could have been more explanation to things happening, the book has quite a dream like/mysterious feel to it but on occasion it was confusing to know what the characters were on about, you have to get the hint as they don't exactly spell things out for you.
I'd recommend this as an easy classic to read though for anyone else like me who isn't experienced in older books. Just be prepared with some tissues to hand! You may cry.
